5 out of 5 stars My own mind   December 11, 2007

Reading this book is as though Workman and Gottlieb opened and read my own mind. Straight facts, no PETA like hyperbole, No Sarah Bradyish cries of WOLF!

There is an old joke that says "Liberal is a conservative waiting to be mugged." Personally, I didn't have to have the mugging before I realized I will never again allow myself to be disarmed. This book should be required reading in EVERY school in this country.

For Conservatives, this one is a dead on sermon to the believers. Now we need to target this book to every one of those in the "waiting to be mugged" line. We should also be demanding accountability from EVERY every public, appointed or elected official that allows such laws and criminal behaviors to continue. If a business wishes to disarm it's patrons, then the store should held accountable and responsible if one of those patrons is injured (or worse) by such policy.

It's time to remove the criminals from our society. It's time to remove the legislative criminals who allow such to occur from our society as well.

It's time, We the People have had enough of both sorts of criminal.

5 out of 5 stars Anti-Gunner is Spelling (and Reason) Challenged   December 23, 2007

If Mr. Hayhoe is any indication of the educational level of what is leading the anti-gun crowd in Florida, can the rank and file members even find the "On" button on their computers?

With multiple misspelled words and tense errors (that means the subject and the verb don't agree, Arthur), and knee-jerk platitudes with no methodology or statistics to back his "arguements" (correct spelling is "arguments," Arthur), Mr. Hayhoe weakens his indefensible conclusions even further with poor syntax and an obvious unfamiliarity with the written word.

Some good advice, Arthur: Before you go challenging a book which has multiple statistical studies of its premise, you should first acquaint yourself with the spell-check feature on your computer.

But then, if you aren't going to familiarize yourself with studies whose methodology has been unchallenged, how could anyone expect you to worry about how foolish you would look ranting and abusing the English language?

Tsk. Tsk. Arthur. Next time, bring your brain--or at least a dictionary.

(Gordon Hutchinson is the author--with Todd Masson--of "THE GREAT NEW ORLEANS GUN GRAB," an expose' of the gun confiscation scandal in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and "THE QUEST AND THE QUARRY," a novel of hunting and family in the deep South.)The Great New Orleans Gun Grab

Review:

The authors have assembled a comprehensive collection of citizen use of firearms in personal self-defense. Each page of this book tells stories of lives saved through the legal use of firearms. Each page expounds the authors' belief that the 21st century is a violent age, police are reactive forces that come after a crime has occurred, and smart citizens arm themselves and become proficient with their firearms.

In one of the most telling quotes on the age in which we live, the authors state on page 23: "...violence does not erupt on schedule and criminals do not make appointments in advance."

It is for this reason, the most popular feature in all National Rifle Association magazines is the "Armed Citizen." This section recreates incidents of citizens defending their lives with firearms. And it is the first feature most readers turn to when they open the pages of any NRA publication.

"American Fights Back--Armed Self Defense in a Violent Age" reads like an expanded "Armed Citizen," with hundreds of stories of citizens saving lives with guns contained within its heavily researched 200 pages.

This book has become my most consistent reference in a large library of gun-rights and firearms activist books and publications. And it would be equally important to any gunowner by proving that "Nanny-Statist" theories the police will protect you will never work. The only people who will survive an armed encounter with a societal predator are those who are likewise armed.

These are the stories you rarely see in the media--the stories of the victims who fought back, and because they had a gun, survived. In hundreds of stories the authors describe the thugs who attempted to rob, rape, or kill innocent victims who, because they had a gun, turned out to be not so helpless--and stopped the attack on themselves or someone else.

This is an important book, and one that should be in the library of every gun owner serious about protecting his God-given right of self defense and personally arming himself.

Get "America Fights Back," and add it to your library. It will make you a wiser and more defensive gun owner, and a more vigilant defender of your rights. And it will give you a ready arsenal of answers the next time someone tries to tell you why we shouldn't be armed.

5 out of 5 stars Surprise! Anti-Gunner posts negative review.   January 22, 2008

This book offsets the pervasive lie that firearms are rarely used in self defense. In fact, several university-level studies have shown that guns are used in self defense as many as three million times each year in the U.S.

It's a hoot that Authur Hayhoe of the Florida Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, an anti-gun rights group, would post a a negative review (complete with misspellings)

If you wonder whether people actually do use guns to protect themselves and their families, read this book! From their own mouths, people describe how they were able to save their lives as well as the lives of family members, because they had a legal firearm.

The "Flat Earth Society" anti-gun rights folks like to pretend this isn't true, but real reports such as in this book ring true. If people are doing it, it's hard to convince the public that it never happens.

5 out of 5 stars a convert   December 26, 2007

I'll admit I likely would never have read this book if my husband hadn't put it on my "required reading list". I'd read one other of Dave Workman's books on my own (about PETA), so I was familiar with the name and writing style.

I was not a gun person when we met, point in fact, I was a pacifist and and ambivalent, if not anti-gun. Having associated with my husband's family and the ranch (three miles from the border), my viewpoint changed relatively quickly, I had Geoffrey teach me to shoot.

After several border incidents, I am a complete convert, and America Fights Back is a perfect expression of how I feel about the subject

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read...   January 12, 2008

I picked this book up based upon a recommendation at an "open carry" web site. I am a gun owner and have always understood that the Constitution protects my individual right to own and carry a firearm. However, I thought it might be good to read a contemporary book on the issue and found these authors presentation of the current state of the debate refreshing. They weave in a fantastic review of real life stories of those who exercised their right to defend themselves and others.

The author addresses all of those trite sound bites we so frequently hear trotted out by the liberal papers and "mainstream" media outlets universally opposed to firearms. Both of the authors are consummate professionals in the firearms business and active in the defense of our second amendment right.

I must admit, the most poignant thing I learned from this book is just how often American citizens use firearms for self defense and the defense of others. Even when exercised, our right to defend ourselves is never noted in the media. So many of us have lost the collective individualism (sounds odd, but it works - each American a self reliant individual yet working together as one nation) that made this nation the most powerful in the world.

If you aren't a gun owner, after reading this book you may become one.
